How to Read Hieroglyphs: Unit 1

In HOW TO READ HIEROGLYPHS UNIT 1, we devote five hours to understanding how hieroglyphs work and learning the main phonetic signs, culminating in reading an ancient Egyptian offering formula.  This introductory class does not assume any previous knowledge, and once you complete this unit, you can continue on to many more classes about ancient Egyptian grammar and ultimately reading actual hieroglyphic texts from temple and tomb walls.

HOW TO READ HIEROGLYPHS UNIT 1 has two sections to accommodate as many time zones as possible. The 9-10PM US Eastern Time section meets live Mondays, October 14, 21, 28 and November 4 and 11 at 9-10PM.  The 3-4PM US Eastern Time section will meet Wednesdays October 16, 23, 30, November 6 and 13 at 3-4PM

What is Ancient Egyptian Art?

Since the ancient Egyptians had no word that we can translate as "art," this hour-long webinar provides multiple ways of answering that question. An aesthetically pleasing object can be given meaning through its original function, material, and symbolism. From hieroglyphic texts, we learn how statues could be receptacles for the soul, wall paintings in a palace might evoke the sun god's glory, and a simple amulet wards off a blood-thirsty goddess. At the end of one hour, you will have met some of the most famous (and some not-so-famous) works of pharaonic art and understood what it meant to the ancient people who made it.
